Maahefun – A Celebration of Fellowship

17 february 2026 — 09:50

On February 13, students of the Maldivian National Union gathered to celebrate Maahefun. This is a unique Maldivian tradition; although Maahefun is celebrated on the eve of Ramadan, it has no religious undertones. It is the celebration of food, fellowship and unity; it’s a beloved and anticipated annual gathering of friends, families and loved ones.

Traditional spicy dishes include onions, eggs, lemons, salt, chili pepper and are based on smoked fish or fish paste. Maahefun is not complete without sweet dishes – tasty pastries with fillings, banana bread, chocolate cake and pudding. Iced coffee is a traditional drink.

Maahefun is the celebration of fellowship, allowing the students of the Maldivian National Union to feel connected while far from their home.
