The history of the development of the Department of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine, as well as the entire service, is closely linked with the name of Vladimir Spas. Vladimir Spas began his career as a 5th year student when he began working as an anesthesiologist assistant at Grodno Regional Clinical Hospital. In 1964 he graduated from the Grodno State Medical Institute as a part of the first graduation. After graduating from the institute, he remained to work as an anesthesiologist at the hospital. At that time he was the first and the only one in the Grodno Regional Clinical Hospital.

In 1967 he organized and headed the first Department of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine, which he headed until 1971.

Since 1969, Vladimir Spas began his teaching activities as the first teacher of the discipline at the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Grodno State Medical Institute.

Since 1976 he headed the course of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine at the Grodno State Medical Institute.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine at the Grodno State Medical Institute was opened in 1991.

During the period of the Department’s existence 5 PhD theses have been defended, 11 patents were obtained. Academic staff of the Department has been published over 400 articles and 2 monographs.

Department today:

The main research areas at the present time are: pathogenesis, genetic prerequisites for the development and intensive therapy of sepsis and multiorgan dysfunction in adults and children, extracorporeal blood purification in intensive care, optimization of anesthesia support in various fields of surgery.

Since September 1, 2015 the Department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Ruslan Yakubtsevich.
